Why Compost?
Composting is the foundation of organic gardening. It improves soil structure, adds nutrients, and helps retain moisture. Plus, it's free!
Building Your Compost Bin
A simple three-bin system works best: one filling, one cooking, one ready to use. You can build bins from pallets or buy ready-made ones.
The Perfect Mix
Aim for a balance of "greens" (nitrogen-rich materials) and "browns" (carbon-rich materials):
- Greens: Grass clippings, vegetable scraps, coffee grounds
- Browns: Cardboard, dry leaves, straw, wood chips
Troubleshooting
If your compost smells bad, it's too wet or has too many greens. Add more browns and turn it. If it's not breaking down, it might be too dry or need more greens.
