January Jobs on the Allotment

It's Planning Time

January might seem quiet, but it's the perfect time to plan your growing year. Review last year's successes and failures, and order seeds early for the best selection.

Jobs to Do

  • Dig over empty beds on dry days
  • Spread compost and manure
  • Prune apple and pear trees
  • Check stored produce and remove any rotting items
  • Clean and oil tools
  • Repair structures like bean frames and fruit cages

What to Sow

It's too early for most seeds, but you can sow:

  • Onions and leeks (in a heated propagator)
  • Early broad beans (under cover)
  • Microgreens on a windowsill
