Growing Soft Fruits: Raspberries, Strawberries & More

Planning Your Fruit Area

Soft fruits are perennial, so choose their position carefully. Most need full sun and well-drained soil. Allow space for picking and maintenance.

Strawberries

The easiest soft fruit to grow. Plant in autumn or early spring. Replace plants every 3-4 years as yields decline.

Raspberries

Summer-fruiting varieties crop on last year's canes, while autumn varieties fruit on new growth. Both need support with posts and wires.

Blackcurrants, Redcurrants & Gooseberries

These bushes are easy to grow and very productive. Blackcurrants like rich soil and hard pruning; redcurrants and gooseberries prefer lighter pruning.
