Growing Pumpkins and Squash

Choosing Varieties
There are two main types: summer squash (courgettes, patty pans) and winter squash (butternut, pumpkins). Summer types are eaten fresh; winter types store for months.
Sowing and Planting
Sow seeds on their edge in April, indoors. Plant out after the last frost, giving each plant at least 1m square of space - they're hungry, thirsty sprawlers!
Growing Tips
- Plant on a mound of compost for best results
- Water regularly, especially when fruits are forming
- Feed weekly with comfrey tea
- Put a tile under developing fruits to prevent rot
Harvesting and Storage
Leave winter squash on the plant until the stems start to dry. Cure in the sun for a week, then store in a cool, dry place. They'll keep for months.
